Welcome to our Candle Care Guide! We believe that a well-cared-for candle can bring hours of delightful fragrance and a touch of warmth to your home. Whether you've chosen from our own Seddon and Davison range of scented candles or from one of our hand-selected suppliers, proper candle care is essential. With the right care, some of our larger pillar candles can burn for up to 150 hours - so here's how to keep your candles looking great and burning beautifully.
Top 5 Tips for Candle Care
- 1. Avoid Soot! Choose the Perfect Spot:
- Light your candle in a well-ventilated room, away from drafts and fans. This helps prevent sooting (black marks on the container or, even worse, walls) and ensures even burning.
- 2. Stop Tunnelling! First Burn Tip:
- For the first use, let your regular-sized candle burn for 1.5 to 2 hours. This prevents tunnelling, where wax builds up around the edges, ensuring an even melt pool.
- 3. Maximise Burn Time! Don't Overdo It:
- Avoid burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Prolonged burning can cause the wick to shift, leading to uneven burning and potential safety hazards.
- 4. Perfect Wick! Keep It Trimmed and Centred:
- Always keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings and matches. Debris can act as a secondary wick, causing the candle to burn faster. Trim your wick to 5mm when the wax is set to prevent high flames, smoking, and sooting. After extinguishing the flame, centre and straighten the wick for the next use.
- 5. Prevent Warping! Store Candles the Right Way:
- Store your candles that aren’t in use in a cool, dry, and dark place to prevent fading and warping. For those on display, avoid exposing them to direct sunlight or harsh indoor lighting, even for white candles.

- Jar Candle (170g): Approximately 50 hours

- Short Dinner Candles: Around 4.5 hours
- Rustic Dinner Candles: Around 14 hours

- Medium Pillar Candle: Around 40 hours
- Slim Tall Pillar Candles: Around 60 hours
- Large Pillar Candles: Up to 150 hours
